During the forties and fifties, a throw pillow might have been found centered in the middle of the two main pillows on a bed or tucked demurely into one corner of the sofa. They designer throw pillows were generally hand made out of a hand quilted material, perhaps crocheted, or maybe even knitted. The designer of these pillows was probably grandma! These designer throw pillows were generally smaller in size and were used mostly as an accent.

Then came the big, bold and very loud years of the sixties, seventies and even into the eighties; everything was huge and designed to make a very bold statement! The materials ranged from silk to leather, even faux furs and everything in between while the pillow stuffing had just as much variety. Today we have turned to a more sophisticated look making a statement of elegance and maturity. While textures and fabrics seems to take two different and distinct paths; one seems to focus more on the richer and sometimes more dense materials such as brocades, silks while the other paths seem to stick to the more natural fibers and ecologically friendly fabrics such as cottons and linens. The fillings or stuffing of designer throw pillows are more technological such as using memory foam and gel as well as fibers that are anti allergens.

Many of today’s designers like Thomas Paul, Oromono and others are very talented and skilled as they incorporate a wide variety of shapes, sizes, textures and colors. Some of them have even designed memory foam travel pillows that are stylish as well as comfortable and easy to carry wherever you need to go.
